There’s something about a drop in temperature that makes us want to hide under a blanket all winter. Bohemian style is actually perfect for cosy dressing for the cooler months! It’s easy to find that 'perfectly undone' look, where you can pile on your favorite oversized knits, flowy maxidresses, paired with boots and socks underneath for warmth and style without a second thought.
If you’re looking for outfits that feel like a giant hug but still look curated, you’re in the right place. From market shopping to lunch by the open fire Sundays, here’s how to master the art of layering.
Start with lightweight foundation pieces.
The secret to perfect layering starts with breathable base pieces. Think soft cotton tees, fitted long sleeves, spencers if you're old like me, cotton leggings and wooly socks that sit comfortably under heavier textures.
Warm tones such as cream, chocolate, rust, olive and dusty rose to name just a few, create the perfect bohemian palette and make mixing layers effortless. Flowy fabrics also help keep the relaxed silhouette that boho style is known for. Where you are using highly patterned fabrics for your middle layer, say dress, blouse or skirt, it may feel easier to match up your outfit by using a plain coloured knit over the top, by picking one of the colours in the pattern and match it with that.
Another thing to try which is a simple winter edition, is a denim jacket or vintage style leather jacket or a biker style jacket to embody the "bohomoto" style that became popular in winter 2025, thrown on over your patterned maxidress.
Using a combination of fitted and oversized shapes keeps your outfit balanced while still feeling effortless. Alternatively, you can pop on a belt in between all your loose layers, which will add a bit of shape to your outfit, to prevent the sack wearing feeling.
Adding Edgy and Modern Touches to Bohemian Style
Easy layering, texture, and individuality are key components of bohemian style. The allure of bohemian clothing is that each item has a narrative and feels acquired over time. Hence why vintage inspiration is paired hand in hand with boho style. Layered accessories that tell a story, such as a scarf bought in a flea market in Paris, Mala beads found in a quirky shop in the Walking Street Markets in Koh Samui Thailand and a leather belt purchased off a vintage stall in the middle of Rome add character and individuality and are easy to throw on over a plain turtle neck jumper, paired with a kimono or velvet embroidered jacket like our Hummingbird version. These types of pieces are talking pieces and add depth to the ensemble, while a flowing fortuneteller dress and vintage leather boots underneath quickly establish that free-spirited base.
Bohemian fashion has evolved by blending in trending tones and silhouettes, creating styles like moto boho and edgy boho. This is where soft, romantic pieces are paired with darker accents, black biker leather jackets, black biker boots or chunky sole boots give the outfit a more modern feel.

Belts
A wide belt can completely transform the silhouette of a loose dress, adding shape without losing that relaxed feel. Choosing vintage inspired buckles or western style buckles for a more eclectic touch.
2. Statement hat
No bohemian look feels complete without a statement hat. Whether it’s a baker boy cap or train driver hat at your husband may call it, a structured felt piece, or a weathered straw style, hats give the outfit a sense of intention while still feeling carefree. They can also save your hair style from the frizz factor in the rain, as well as providing extra warmth. Remember when Mum used to say if your head and feet are warm, the heat won't escape your body!
3. Boots
Boots are essential for achieving that effortless edgy boho feel. Paired with flowing dresses and layered fabrics, they create the perfect contrast between feminine and rugged elements. Moto-style boots especially bring a rebellious touch that makes the overall styling feel more contemporary and trend-driven, where as a more fitted boot like our vintage inspired boots or a pointy toe boot can give a more old school gypsy vibe.
4. Jackets
Oversized jackets with embroidery, fringe, faux fur and faux or real leather, add another layer of texture that makes the outfit feel warmer and more textured. Long cardigans are a winner for me, as they are so comfortable if you're at work or sitting in the car. Leather jackets and structured outerwear can modernize traditional bohemian styling and to me feels a little more dressy for going out for dinner and drinks. Chunky knit sweaters look amazing over maxidresses, I recommend wearing them with a belt to tuck in just a small section, so you can give the outfit shape and more interest. As mentioned earlier, a basic denim jacket is a must have for every wardrobe, so easy to throw in if needed or sling over your handbag just in case.

Play with Proportions
If you aren't a fan of oversized look or you feel overwhelmed with too much volume of fabric, and easy way to overcome this is to play with proportions. The contrast between oversized and fitted pieces creates movement, and the layered element gives warmth without being too fussy with lots of layers.
Pair flowing maxi dresses with cropped jackets, oversized knits with slim base layers, or structured outerwear layered over softer fabrics to create shape without losing that free-spirited feel. Combining long and loose silhouettes with more fitted elements helps layered outfits feel intentional rather than bulky.
Try pairing some of these pieces:
- Chunky oversized sweaters with fitted ribbed tanks over jeans
- Flowy maxi skirts with structured leather jackets
- Longline cardigans over a slim denim skirt or jeans
- Oversized coats or blazers, with feminine slip dresses
- Relaxed shackets layered over soft cotton basics
The beauty of bohemian layering is that nothing has to feel too polished. The mix of proportions adds depth and individuality while allowing each piece to complement the next naturally.
Edgy Boho Meets Vibrant Prints
Styling bohemian pieces can also feel fresh and modern when you mix in fun, vibrant prints that bring the whole look to life. Pairing edgy layers like leather boots, structured jackets, and statement belts with standout pieces such as our Goddess Dress in the Coral Night print, creates an unexpected eclectic look that just works. The bold print adds movement and personality, while the tougher accessories ground the look, giving it that effortless mix of soft femininity and edgy boho energy.
